Google Merchants needed a high-converting owned channel beyond paid ads and email. The opportunity was Chrome Notifications — a direct browser-native touchpoint reaching users who had already shown purchase intent. But the challenge wasn’t technical. It was product: how do you make notifications feel useful rather than intrusive at 1M+ user scale?
The answer lived inside Product Studio — Google’s generative AI tool built into Merchant Center that lets merchants create professional product imagery in seconds. By pairing Product Studio’s AI-generated assets directly with Chrome Notifications, merchants could push visually rich, contextually relevant product moments at exactly the right time — without a creative team or a photo shoot.

The Approach
The strategy was to make Chrome Notifications feel like a curated product moment rather than a generic alert. Merchants used Product Studio to generate multiple scene variants of their products — the best-performing asset was then automatically surfaced in the notification. When a user received the push, they saw a rich, visually compelling product image with a direct action. Here’s how that notification experience looked:

The Outcome
Shipping Chrome Notifications with Product Studio-generated assets moved engagement metrics at a scale most PMs never touch. The combination of AI-generated imagery and browser-native delivery created a significantly higher-signal touchpoint than standard email or display retargeting.
Rare for a PM role — maintained full product ownership while also being accountable for the revenue impact of notification-driven conversions across the merchant base.
